Plant Based Business: Interview with Whole Shift Wellness Co-Founder, Serena Sabala

Serena Sabala is the co-founder of Whole Shift Wellness, a wellbeing company that specialises in bespoke programs for busy and time pressed professionals who want to look and feel their best. 

Co-founders, Serena and Eugene, work with clients to give them the tools to get back on the road to health and happiness.

Was there a defining moment that made you realise that you want to focus on wellness? Can you tell us a bit about what pushed you to focus on this area.

The seed was planted at a very your age: my dad was a highly successful entrepreneur but unfortunately he didn’t have the tools to take care of himself whilst dealing with the pressure of a young family and creative business. When I was only 8, he got really sick and has never fully recovered since. It was the most challenging experience of my life and I’ve actually recently produced and directed a documentary about it all titled “Tale Padre” (Like Father in English - available on Vimeo). This is what sparked my interest in wellness and how best to take care of ourselves so we have our best to give to those around us. We like to say “you’ve got to be Selfish in order to be Selfless”.

A lot of our readers are entrepreneurs, could you give them a couple of simple wellness tips?

When it comes to wellness, slow and steady definitely wins the race. Time pressed business owners tend to fall for traps that promise huge results in a short time with minimal effort. None of that stuff works and in fact it tends to back fire with a vengeance. Better to create a sustainable medium to long term plan than addresses the issues at the root level. Trust me when I say, you’ll save time, money and energy in the long run compared to all the time, money and energy you’ve wasted on quick fixes that didn’t work.

What comes first, a healthy body or healthy mind?

Body and mind are deeply intertwined and connected. One profoundly affects the other so its important to take care of both. Having said that, we believe that everything starts in the mind so that should really be the place to start from.

Do you have any facts or statistics that might shock our readers, regarding wellbeing of busy individuals & entrepreneurs?

The World Health Organisation reports that by 2020 chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes) will account for almost 3/4 of all deaths worldwide. Most of us know that those diseases are largely preventable with healthy lifestyle choices. Also, 40% of all disabilities in the world are due to depression and anxiety: they too are closely linked to lifestyle. Finally, the recommended amount of physical activity per week is less than many believe: 2.5 hours in a whole week (30 min a day, 5 days a week) AND it doesn’t have to involve a gym!

What would you say to someone that feels that they do not have the time for your program? How can they make time in their busy lives?

This is a very common dilemma that comes up SO often. It’s not at all about having time. Nobody has time. It’s about making time and in fact it’s even more about priorities. What’s the difference between busy entrepreneurs who are fit and healthy and busy entrepreneurs who are not? It’s not time. They all have 24 hours in a day. However how they spend their time is remarkably different. They prioritise their health and wellbeing over many other things therefore they MAKE time for it.

With all that said, it’s important to start small and only increase the commitment to such activities gradually. Going from never working out to working out 5 times a week will probably be unsustainable for most. But if you work gradually and in a smart way you’ll soon find that your wellness practices will become an integral part of your routine like brushing your teeth and showering: we seem to always find time for those (thankfully).

What do you think sets Whole Shift Wellness apart from other wellness programs?

We have over 20 years of combined experience transforming the wellbeing of over 500 individuals across 5 countries. This has allowed us to identify the most common mistakes they make when wanting to improve: these mistakes transcend geography, gender, education, income, sex. They’re universal. Our methodology revolves around preventing them to fast track your journey. It will also spark transformation at the root level rather than temporary change: once you’re transformed, you can’t go back to doing things the way you did because you’re not that person any longer.

What will you be doing at the Plant Based Business Bootcamp?

We will host a workshop for anyone who’s interested in learning effective tips and exercises to improve their health and wellbeing right away. Some of the topics covered are:
