“Before starting OPP, I was planning on studying Evolutionary psychology or something similar. But now there’s no time for that!”

Joe Hill is co-founder of One Planet Pizza, the UK’s first frozen vegan pizza company. Not only are Joe and Mike great friends of Vevolution, but they are also one of the winners of last year’s Pitch + Plant.

This year, One Planet Pizza will be returning to the Plant Based Business Bootcamp and Pitch + Plant, but this time, Joe will be a part of the expert marketing/comms panel, and they’ll also be catering the evening event.

Keep on reading to find out a bit more about this vegan pizza expert, before his appearance at the bootcamp!

Have you always wanted to run a business? Or did you start out in life wanting to do something else entirely?

It was never a dream of mine to run my own business! For most of my life I always wanted to travel the world. I studied Psychology at University and then worked for a mental health charity for several years. Before starting OPP, I was planning on studying Evolutionary psychology or something similar. But now there’s no time for that!

Where did your love for cooking come from?

I’ve been fortunate to have grown up around not one, but two parents who always loved cooking. My dad’s been vegan since I was born and so was into his lentil, curries and stir fry dishes, while my Mum would be cooking stews, veggie shepherd’s pies and lasagnes. Food has always been a big part of my life! When I eventually turned vegan 3 years ago cooking properly became necessary and vital. And then I began to really enjoy it.

What has been your proudest moment at One Planet Pizza?

Our proudest moment has to be winning the Vegfest vegan food award for the second year running back in 2018!

Do you think social media has played an important role in growing this business?

Social media has been integral to our business from day one. As a small family-run start up, we’ve always relied on the power of word of mouth. We’ve never had a big marketing budget and so we’ve worked very hard on building up a great reputation within the vegan community, using brilliant ambassadors and working closely with influencers and bloggers. Without these individuals I doubt we’d be where we are now.

“We’re now working on an innovative new project to educate the British public on the impact of food on their carbon footprint. Watch this space…”

How is One Planet Pizza working toward being eco-friendly?

Our mission has always been to create products that are sustainable as they are delicious. We’re extremely proud to be the first pizza company in Europe (as far we know) to use fully compostable pizza boxes. The sleeves that go on these boxes are also fully recyclable as well as being made from party recycled materials. We also source our ingredients locally where possible such as our Norfolk grown cold-pressed rapeseed oil. We’re now working on an innovative new project to educate the British public on the impact of food on their carbon footprint. Watch this space…

What is your favourite One Planet Pizza product?

I love our Meatless feast pizza which is coming out later this year. It’s going to be an absolute game change in the vegan pizza world!

“We know Damien and Judy really well and are so happy to continue to work closely together and help this movement grow and thrive however we can!”

Can you tell us about any exciting plans for the future of OPP?

As well as the Meatless Feast pizza, we’re also getting ready to launch our first ever Gluten-free vegan pizza. We think it’s better than any other gluten-free pizza on the market – but that’s up for you to decide. Hopefully it’ll be out later this year as well.

Mike and I have also just launched our brand new YouTube channel and released our first episode of ‘OPP Round For Tea.’ We travel the country to meet and cook with some of the leading figures within the movement. Every month we’re going to release a new episode with an amazing new host from within the vegan community.

Why did you want to get involved with Vevolution?

Vevolution started around the same time as One Planet Pizza and so we’ve grown together from humble beginnings! We know Damien and Judy really well and are so happy to continue to work closely together and help this movement grow and thrive however we can!
