World Vegan Day (1st of November) is a day to raise awareness, and celebrate veganism in its entirety. If you’re spending the evening indoors, why not use the time to finally watch a couple of these brilliant movies. There are so many eye-opening, life changing films on the topic of veganism, that should be watched whether you’re vegan or not (they might just change your mind).

So, we have compiled a list of seven thought-provoking movies that you can watch this World Vegan Day!

If you are interested in the environment - Cowspiracy

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a documentary exploring the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. It was created by the inspiring duo, Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn. There are so many unbelievable facts and figures involved in this movie, and has been responsible for a lot of people going vegan. Cowspiracy claims that animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution - watch it, and you might agree.

If you are interested in the power of a plant-based diet - Forks Over Knives

This film looks into the claim that most chronic diseases that afflict humans can be controlled, or reversed, by eating a plant-based diet. If you haven’t looked into veganism before, the summary of the film may sound a bit far-fetched, but it’s very convincing once you’ve watched it. ‘Forks Over Knives’ states that processed foods and oils must be avoided in order to live a healthy life.

If you are interested in health & conspiracies - What The Health

Dubbed ‘the health film that health organisations don’t want you to see’. This movie is a follow-up from the creators of Cowspiracy, and attempts to expose the corrupted healthcare organisations in the USA. It features interviews with physicians, and shows Kip Andersen desperately attempting to get in contact with representatives of health organisations (with not much luck). Overall, ‘What The Health’ is a critique on the consumption of animal products, and advocates for a plant-based diet.

If you are interested in an inspiring story - Running For Good

This feature-length sports documentary, directed by Keegun Kuhn, observes Fiona Oakes in her attempt to set a global record and compete in the “toughest footrace on earth”. The Marathon Des Sables is a 250km race through the Sahara Desert, and it is deeply moving to watch Fiona embark on this treacherous journey in the name of animal rights.

If you are interested in something heart-warming - Okja

Korean director, Bong Joon Ho, creates a touching work of art with this action-adventure film. It sends a clear and important message, whilst also being light-hearted, funny, and entertaining. The movie follows a young girl who travels far and wide to save her best friend, a beautiful beast named Okja.

If you are interested in animal rights - Earthlings

Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, this documentary uses hidden cameras, and unseen footage to expose industries that rely on animals for profit. It’s difficult to watch, but should be on your list if you’re unaware of the atrocities that go on in this world, and what animals must endure. It is divided into five chapters: pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific research.

If you are interested in something comical - Carnage

The year is 2067, carnism is banned, and the majority of the UK is vegan. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Simon Amstell creats this idyllic world in his genius mockumentary, Carnage, which proves to be a great watch for all ages and walks of life. This feature-length film is genuinely funny, and is never too preachy. There are also cameos from Martin Freeman, Joanna Lumley, and more.

If you are interested in antibiotic resistance in agriculture - Swine

SWINE is a short documentary looking at the emerging threat of antibiotic resistance developing in the farmed animal population. It was written and produced by Vevolution’s Damien Clarkson & Robbie Lockie of Plant-Based News in 2016. The film features former world freerunning champion Timothy Shieff.
