The 15th– 21st of October is Chocolate Week in the UK, which means hundreds of chocolate-themed events are taking place right now. The week, as a whole, aims to promote Fair Trade chocolate, independent chocolatiers, and fine flavour chocolate. Many vegan-friendly chocolate brands actually tend to be Fair Trade, ethically produced, and organic – so there’s truly no better time to celebrate these plant-based sweet treats.

In a perfect world, chocolate would last forever and we would always have an unlimited supply in the shops, right? Well, the reality is, the world is running out of chocolate.

In four decades, the amount of land available for growing cocoa has dropped 40%. This is due to climate change and the fact that African farmers are living in poverty (leading them to produce other crops). If production carries on at the same pace, shortfall is expected to be in 2020, which means chocolate prices will increase.

We can avoid the dreaded ‘Chocolate Crisis’ by purchasing more Fair Trade, organic chocolate, and of course, making our carbon footprint as small as possible.

Now that the heavy stuff is out of the way, let’s celebrate Chocolate Week by sharing some chocolate-y recipes, and wonderful Fair Trade chocolate - enjoy!
