One Planet Pizza - Redefining Pizza
As we move towards our first year anniversary, and our second Vevolution, it seems like a good time to reflect on the amazing progress that One Planet Pizza has made in the last 11 months.
In April 2016 we first had the crazy idea of setting up a frozen vegan pizza company, I already part owned and help run a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, but wanted to start a new 100% vegan business. A friend of mine mentioned that there was no really good range of vegan pizzas and pizzas are the one of the biggest selling type of frozen food. Also pizzas are something that people who turn vegan really miss, so it seemed like a great idea to give it a go.
We wanted to make it different from the start, involving the community that we wanted to service, so we set up a crowdfunding campaign that raised £25,000 from over 100 different in just 3 days of going public.
We also contacted some of the leading vegan bloggers and asked them for their support. Everyone we talked to was so enthusiastic, we knew we were on to something exciting. This time last year we had just become the UK’s first frozen Vegan Pizza company, and become Europe’s first vegan pizza company to be crowdfunded. The crowdfunding had been amazingly successful and we were now part owned and funding by over 100 vegans, veggies and veggie curious investors.
Within the next month we held several tasting sessions and tested our pizzas at Vevolution 2016, and then launched our Classic range. This consisted of the Three Cheese Margherita, the Fungi Feast, the Hawaiian and the Med Veg, all made with a range of vegan cheeses and mock ham from our friends at Bute Island.
We created a small production kitchen based in Norfolk and announced our aim to become the number one frozen vegan pizza brand in the UK within 12 months and within Europe within 24 months, and to bring frozen vegan pizzas into the mainstream!
We after 10 months of operation we are well on our way, already winning Vegan Life’s “tried and tested” vegan pizza competition, and now nominated in the Vegfest Awards in the Fast Food category
The business focus for the next 6 months is to increase the number of shops that we are available in by 300%. Currently we are available in just over 30 independent wholefood and health shops, plus online through the Alternative Stores. But from November this number of shops will start to increase as we are being listed with 3 of the major wholesalers, who can distribute to many more shops than we can every delivery direct to. We are also attending many of the major vegan festivals and events coming up including Vevolution Festival 2017, so you can try the pizzas hot as well as buy the frozen ones!
